Paid Family Leave: Supporting Families in All Their Forms

“Our job, first and foremost, is to make sure our family is whole” –Michelle Obama

In my service as your Franklin County Commissioner, I have embraced this central truth:  Franklin County is Central Ohio’s safety net.  Our neighbors, friends, and relatives come to the county to meet their most basic needs. Franklin County agencies provide critical services and supports to all residents.  Yet in my office, we also strive to go above and beyond, ever expanding our understanding by asking the same magic question: “What Do You Need?”

We also recognize that Franklin County sets the baseline for what is acceptable in this community.  There is a certain standard that a forward-looking community like ours must maintain, both for economic competitiveness and for quality of life for all our residents.  Our community dedicates itself to services for seniors, for people battling mental health and addiction, and for kids and adults with intellectual disabilities.  And we must ensure that we are doing everything possible to help every family succeed.

I am proud to share that yesterday my colleagues and I voted to approve a new Paid Family Leave program for all Franklin County employees.  Paid Family Leave will allow time to provide parental care immediately following the birth or adoption of a child, and to care for a covered family member who has a serious medical condition.  In taking this step, we recognize the importance of supporting employees as they balance the demands of career and family.  Implementing a Paid Family Leave program is another step toward providing outstanding service to every resident by maintaining a vibrant county workforce.

Paid Family Leave also helps set the standard that ours is a community that supports families in their time of need.  Many families must make difficult choices in the face of pressure and change.  We work hard every day to meet those needs, and I am unswerving in continuing this important work in the years ahead.

From my family to yours, take care of each other.  We’ve got your back.
